People have suggested using atomic or nuclear weapons as a way to bring Mars out of its current ice age. I think this idea is born from the mistaken perception that heat and temperature are equivalent entities. To give you an example from a common practice on Earth, pottery is made by bringing the temperature of a kiln gradually to many thousands of degrees and then possibly leaving the object in the kiln for days so that the temperature drops slowly and objects don’t break through sudden drops in temperature. The clay melts together to form a vitrification that will not re-dissolve of immersed in water. Exposing the clay object to a high temperature —even very high— would not get the job done. It’s time and heat that make ceramics.
